11 Mosquito Repellent Plants

Mosquitoes are annoying and they spread deadly diseases. There are many chemical based repellents and they have their own health hazards. So, having natural mosquito repellent is a blessing. There are many plants that can make you quit chemical mosquito repelling products.

Mosquitoes are small but one of the most harmful specie to humans. They buzz around and irritate our senses and dine on us. While delivering Zika, west Nile Virus, Malaria and dengue in humans. A study shown that mosquitoes are at top in spreading deadly diseases in humans so mosquitoes can be called worst enemy! But how to get rid of mosquitoes, spraying chemicals are not safe also because they have health hazards also. Nature have solution for that also, there are some plants that repel mosquitoes. Include these plants in your garden and in home and give up chemical mosquito repelling products.

Our body odor and smell of sweat attracts mosquitoes. But there are certain smells that repel mosquitoes but is pleasant for us. There are many sweet smelling plants that have great mosquito repellent properties.

Here is the list of mosquito repellent plants:

1. Lavender

Lavender smell is pleasant and relaxing but not many people know that its scent works as repellent for mosquitoes. Lavender’s aroma is offensive for mosquitoes so its best to grow lavender in pots and place them near doors and windows. You can grow lavender in your lawns so your outdoor activities remain mosquito free. Another way to use lavender is to rub the plant on your skin to release its oils.

2. Basil

Very strong smell of basil is extremely good mosquito repellent. A study revealed that essential oils from basil (Osmium) provide high level protection from mosquitoes. Furthermore basil will enhance the taste of your dishes as its also used in wide range of dishes. Basil can be grown in pots and its leaves emits aroma without crushing them. Place the basil grown pots in your garden or yard to kick out mosquitoes. You can rub basil leaves on your skin to keep mosquitoes away.

3. Peppermint

Peppermints clean and sweet smell is much better than pungent smell of chemical and it serves as mosquito repellent too. A study shown that peppermint acts as repellent when its applied on skin. It’s also killer for mosquito larvae. Grow peppermint in your garden and to fly mosquitoes away just crush few leaves on the plant to release the scent and oils.

4. Marigolds

Many insect repellents contain a compound Pyrethrum, same compound is found in marigolds also. A study was done on essentials oils derived from Marigolds and Myrtle in comparison with DEET. The results were amazing as it demonstrated the protection time of 50% essential oils of marigolds and myrtle were respectively 2.15 and 4.36 hours, compared to 6.23 hours for DEET 25%. Marigolds pots near doors and other mosquito entrance points in home will make a barrier for mosquitoes.

5. Garlic

Garlic is used in many dishes but its eating won’t help in repelling the mosquitoes. But growing garlic in your garden will repel the mosquitoes.

6. Catnip

Catnip is considered one of the best natural insect repellent. Your cats will be happy also to have it around. Catnip contains nepetalactone which is efficient repellent and attractant for cats. Studies revealed that catnip is 10 times more powerful than DEET. Furthermore if you are cat love then your cats will love it also. Catnip can be grown easily in homes. Catnip repel mosquitoes in close proximity for optimal protection crush its leaves.

7. Pennyroyal

Pennyroyal is a famous natural insect repellent. Pennyroyal is from mint family and it’s good to plant it in a container as it can quickly become invasive. Planting pennyroyal around your house keeps away the harmful insects and it can kill any that occupy the area as well as drive newcomers away. Keeping its crushed stems in your pocket keeps mosquitoes away. Pennyroyal can be grown indoors and out door both!

8. Lemon Balm

Lemon balm is member of mint family and it scents like lemon with a hint of mint. Lemon balm has many healing properties but it’s also known for warding off mosquitoes. Another thing is that lemon balm attracts bees and butterflies. Just crush lemon balm leaves on your hand and rub them on your skin to repel mosquitoes.

9. Rosemary

Rosemary is a famous plant which is used to make your dishes tasty but its other attribute is that rosemary is a good mosquito repellent. Rosemary can be grown inside home but sunlight is necessary for its growth.

Gathering at bonfire to repel those annoying disease carrying insects just throw some rosemary stems and leaves in fire. That makes nice smell but it’s strong and unpleasant enough to mosquitoes.

10. Citronella

Citronella (citrosum) plant is garden plant. Its citronella fragrance repels mosquitoes. Its aroma is very pleasant when its leaves are crushed and applied on skin to repel mosquitoes. Citronella belongs to the family of grass. It grows 5 to 6 feet and it’s tolerant to sun stress.

11. Geranium

Geranium has many types but lemon scented geraniums are most effective in repelling mosquitoes. Its scent is similar to citronella. Geraniums have attractive bloom which is pleasant to eyes. Geraniums can be grown in warm, sunny, and dry climate.
