What is Renewable Energy?

Definition of renewable energy is that” the energy which is derived from the natural resources which can be replenish such as, sun, wind and water etc.” renewable energy is totally different from the energy which is taken from oil and coal.

Definition of renewable energy is that” the energy which is derived from the natural resources which can be replenish such as, sun, wind and water etc.” renewable energy is totally different from the energy which is taken from oil and coal. The energy which is derived from coal and oil is called non-renewable energy.  Non-renewable energy relies on burning the material which must be found extracted and it can’t be recreated.

Renewable energy is also called alternative energy, green energy or environment friendly energy. As its having almost zero carbon emissions that’s why it’s called environment friendly. But there are certain types of renewable energy sources that do produce pollution. According to some people nuclear energy is also renewable energy. The global demand for energy needs is increased, that’s why need for renewable energy sources is being considered. Renewable energy largely uses clean natural resources for producing energy.

The non-renewable energy sources are limited and on long they do will end. As their resources are decreasing day by day that’s why need for sustainable energy is required in long run.

Renewable Energy Sources

There are five main and most known renewable energy sources:

  1. Solar Energy
  2. Wind Energy
  3. Hydroelectricity
  4. Geothermal Energy
  5. Biomass Energy

1-Solar Energy

Solar energy is the energy which is derived from sun. This is the fastest growing renewable energy technology in world. Now many people are using solar energy for producing electricity for domestic and commercial uses. Solar panels are available in markets which people can purchase and install them to have power in their homes.

2- Wind Energy

Wind energy is the energy which is derived from the wind and with help of turbines it’s converted into electric power. Though wind mills have been used by humans in ancient times also, but modern technology had enabled them to produce electricity.

As wind turbines are used to make electricity similarly wind pumps are used for pumping water. Wind energy is also rapidly growing renewable energy technology.

3- Hydroelectricity (Hydro Power)

Hydroelectricity or hydro power is still most popular source of renewable energy. Hydroelectricity power is produced by the flowing water. Hydroelectricity (hydro power) plant don’t makes any direct waste and it emits very lower amount of greenhouse gas (CO2) as compare to other types of non-renewable energy power plants.

4- Geothermal Energy

Geothermal energy is the energy which is directly extracted from the depth of earth, usually the heat of magma or hot water. The hot water is pumped up to geothermal power plant which then generates electricity.

5- Biomass Energy

Biomass energy is the energy which is taken usually from plants. Sometimes it’s in form of bio-fuel which used for vehicles or it can be burned to produce electricity. Biomass energy is a carbon neutral energy source that’s why it’s considered more environment friendly than fossil fuels.

Renewable Energy in Future

That’s a solid fact population of globe is increasing rapidly. So need for energy sources increasing with same speed too! The need for efficient and cost effective energy sources is getting most important for upcoming era.

Today majority of world is dependent on fossil fuels such as gasoline or diesel. The alternative energy sources for these fuels are ethanol which is not terribly energy efficient. There is potential that in future fossil fuels will be substituted with other clean technologies such as electrical power, hydrogen power cells, compressed air or new bio-fuels.

Solar energy is having huge potential in future as compare to other renewable energy sources. As sun produces huge amount of energy which is thousands of times greater than the earth’s energy needs.
